FELPHAM, West Sussex - a 53" x 77" watercolour, acrylic, pen and ink illustrated map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. FERNHURST, West Sussex - a 35" x 26" watercolour illustrated map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is displayed in the village hall. FERRING, West Sussex - a computer-assembled 28" x 21" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is on show in Ferring library and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
FILKINS, Oxfordshire - a mixed media collage, 131cm x 165cm, made in 1993, covering the villages of Filkins and Broughton Poggs. Initiated by the WI, it was decided to create a patchwork so as many people as possible from the community could contribute. 43 people from 6 to 80 years of age were involved. Village groups and businesses contributed their own pictures describing themselves. Buildings, flora and fauna and village activities were included.
FILLEIGH, Devon - A 6' x 4' mape with photos made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995.
FISHBOURNE, West Sussex - a fabric hanging made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is hand painted on linen with hand embroidery, applique and gold work, with fringing and beading at the base, 72" x 45". It is on show at Fishbourne Roman Palace and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
FITTLEWORTH, West Sussex - made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
FIVEHEAD and SWELL, Somerset - 24" x 17" colour map produced in 1996. So much information was collected while working on the map that a book was published in 1999 called 'Beyond the Map of Fivehead and Swell', an 8" x 6" paperback of 90 pages, including photos. THE FIVE VILLAGES, West Sussex - The Five Villages Society, representing Aldingbourne, Barnham, Eastergate, Walberton and Yapton, made a 20" x 25" photographic map as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is to be displayed at the Barnham Windmill tea rooms.

FORDER, Cornwall - Produced by the villagers to try and enhance their village centre after concerns about vandalism and fly-tipping, and to increase awareness of the village and its history. Displayed by the river, where seating has been provided, 1996.
FORDINGBRIDGE, Hampshire - an 8' x 3' needlework map made in 1989. On display in the library.

FORMBY, Lancs - a tapestry illustrating the past, present and future of the parish, produced by the Civic Society. A Parish Map is also planned.
FROME, Somerset - the Heart of Frome Parish Map dates from 1996 and was co-ordinated by Kate Lynch with Frome College Community Education. It is a 91" x 61" painted collage housed in Frome Library. Over 150 people of all ages contributed to it.
FRYENT COUNTRY PARK, London - made in 1988 as a response to a hedge being vandalised, this collage map shows the remnants of medieval fields in London, with flora and fauna, ancient hedges, ponds, wild life and fields. It lists over 550 species found in the fields, and has been displayed at many environmental shows.
FUNTINGTON, West Sussex - a 26 x 36 watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is on show at West Ashling village hall and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
GALMPTON and CHURSTON FERRERS, Devon - a 30" x 28" textile map made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. Made of padded calico with stitching and painting, it is designed to hang like a banner and includes photographic inserts. It was hoped that this would be a starting point for local action against proposals to develop an industrial unit in the Brokenbury area.
GARFORTH, West Yorkshire - a 4' x 6' tapestry made in 1991 by pupils at the local comprehensive school. It depicts mining and rhubarb farming, once the two main industries of the town.
GARSINGTON, Oxfordshire - a painting by local artist and calligrapher Bernard Hickey, produced in 1990-93 by the local history group (see their web-site). It shows some village features and history.
GEORGEHAM and CROYDE, Devon - a 5' x 3'9" canvas embroidery made by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995, and involving the local school and members of the wider community. The map has been hanging in the church, but serious problems with damp have been encountered.
GLANFORD PARISH COUNCIL, now in Lincolnshire, initiated a Parish Map competition in 1987-88 as part of the European Year of the Environment. Resulting maps came from Barton upon Humber, Bottesford, Broughton, Burton upon Stather, Hibaldstow, Holme, Melton Ross, Strawby, South Ferriby, Ulceby, West Halton and Wootton.
GLENFIELD, Leicestershire - a photo-montage made in 1996 by Glenfield Wildlife Survey working with the local youth club. The young people went out with cameras, with a photographer in residence, to take pictures of the places they valued. The idea was to give a voice to young people who are too often regarded as trouble makers.
GNOSALL, Staffordshire - a 3' x 2' noticeboard made in 1987.
GOATHURST, Somerset - a cine-film and exhibition initiated by the local history society between 1990-95.
GODSHILL, Isle of Wight - Godshill Parish Council with the Isle of Wight Countryside Management Service worked together to make a notice board with a map on one side for display in the car park and village square. Money was raised by selling advertising space to local businesses, who wrote their histories as well as showing their wares.
GORING BY SEA, West Sussex - a 32" x 46" watercolour map created by 12 local amateur painters as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is displayed in the local library and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
GORSLEY, Herefordshire - A poster painted in 1993, initiated by the Gorsley Village Hall Map Project. Displayed in the village school.
GOUDHURST, Kent - a colour illustrative pen work made in 1987.
GRAFFHAM, SELHAM and SOUTH AMBERSHAM, West Sussex - a 33" x 46" watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is housed in the Empire Hall, Graffham and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
GRAND UNION CANAL, London - a 23" x 20" silkscreen map made in 1985.
GRAPPENHALL, Cheshire - tapestry produced with Cheshire WI and the Cheshire Landscape Trust, 1995.
GREAT CHEVERELL, Wiltshire - Four 6' x 4' tapestry maps made at Holy Trinity CofE Aided Primary School in 1993, by children working with artist Julieann Worrall Hood. Each map represented one of the villages covered by the school: (1) Great Cheverell - this shows the Chervil plant (from which the village name derives); cider apples, orchard and press; shearing of sheep and founding & export of sheep bells; Granny and the pig; (2) Coulston - the postman who cycles from Westbury to bring the post and empty the old box in the village; the local 'big house', Baynton House; (3) Erlestoke - the ghost of Lady Charlotte, who lived at Erlestoke House (now a prison); The Worton Giant, the tallest man in England who lived there; (4) Little Cheverell - owl with fish (The Owl pub was once a fish shop); The Moonraker; a boiling kettle (representing the Boiling Kettle Spring).

GREAT HATFIELD, East Yorkshire - a map and cushion knitted in 1987.
GREAT HOLLAND, Essex - a parish poem written in 1988

GREAT WITLEY & HILLHAMPTON, Worcestershire - Parish Map, completed in 2006 (see detail above). Local people made their contributions to the map and Diana Winsor, a local writer and artist took on the work of creating the pictorial map. One of its inspirations was the late Doug Bowen, to whom the map is dedicated. His family is one of the oldest in the parish, and he had spent his life from boyhood to the last weeks of his life in loving observation of its landscape and wild creatures. The map took three years to complete the map, and it was finished it in time for Doug Bowen to see it just a week before he died. Diana has since been approached to help interpret maps for neighbouring villages. HAPBERTONFORD and HARBETON, Devon - a tapestry started by the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995.
HAPTON, Lancashire - An historical map painted in 1995, commissioned by the parish council to mark their centenary.
HANBURY, Worcestershire - A map made by pupils at Hanbury CE First School in 2006 as part of the Worcestershire Parish Mapping Project.
HANHAM, Somerset - (1) Hanham History Group, 1990, (2) Kingswood and Hanham Old People and People's Welfare Association, 1990, (3) made in Ellsbridge House calligraphy class, 1995.
HARTFIELD, West Sussex - (1) an embroidered map made in 1988 which has also been produced as a teatowel and postcard; (2) a map for the millennium.
HARTING, West Sussex - a 32" x 44" watercolour map made in 1999 as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place. Some more details can be found here.
HARTLEYBURN and HALTON LEA GATE, Northumberland - Maps were initiated here in an attempt to build community spirit in a parish which has suffered from pit closures and social decline: (1) Visual and audio map, 1995; (2) textile and photography map by community group with local school, 1995.
HASTINGS, East Sussex - a photo-montage made in 1988 for an exhibition at Michelham Priory organised by the East Sussex Federation of Womens Institutes.
HATHERN, Leicestershire - Children's drawings were turned into a map over two weeks at the local primary school.
HAUGHTON, Staffordshire - a black and white drawing 28" x 24" commissioned by the parish council and made between 1987-88 by the WI. Three were made and are kept at the Bell Inn, the Village Hall and the Shropshire Inn.
HAVANT, Hampshire - (1) Community projects - including Parish Map-making - initiated by the Community Recreation Manager in 1995, working with Dot To Dot and local communities (2) Warren Park's textile map with photographs of 1995 involved around 180 people from 3 to 85 years of age in a celebration of the church and surrounding estate. A colourful companion piece was made by local school children.

HAYWARDS HEATH, West Sussex - a 31" x 41" computer assembled watercolour map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is displayed in the town hall, with a copy in Clair Hall, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
HAZELDOWN, Devon - a fabric collage made by Hazeldown school.
HAZELGROVE BECK to PORT MULGRAVE, Cumbria - notebooks and survey for a book of maps related to wanderings along and beneath the coastline of East Cumbria, 1986-87.
HEATHERSETT, Norfolk - a paper map housed in the library.
HEAVITREE, Devon - a 20" x 18" watercolour made by a member of the local Women's Institute group as part of Devon Federation of Women's Institutes 75th anniversary in 1995. It is a street map with thumbnail sketches of places of interest, and can be seen at the United Reformed Church.
HECKINGTON, Lincolnshire - four maps made in 1988 by Skellingthorpe WI: a felt map, a stamp made in one hour, a clay map and a village trail.
HEDGERLEY, Buckinghamshire - Hedgerley Historical Society produced a Parish map for the millennium, featuring 21 minatures of historic buildings and places of interest, a cartographic map at the centre, plant and bird life along the bottom and activities of the village along the top, 1999.
HENFIELD, West Sussex - a 49" x 36" watercolour, pen and ink illustrated map made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It hangs in the foyer of Henfield Hall, and is featured in the book A Sense of Place.Some more details can be found here.
HENLEAZE, Bristol - (1) collage, 1990. (2) A collage of locally found natural materials, buttercup petals, herbs, grasses. This map was made as a record of Golden Hill before redevelopment by Tesco, and was used in the public enquiry against this. The protesters lost, but saved some trees and set up a group to help others in similar circumstances. This led to other projects looking at the vanishing green space of Henleaze, 1990.
HEREFORD & WORCESTER NATURE TRUST held a Parish Maps competition in 1986, involving nine local schools. The winners were Ivington, Topsley and Michaelchurch Escley schools.
HEYSHOTT, West Sussex - a 24" x 52" gouache painting by local artist Vivian Palmer showing the parish as seen from the downs. It was made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project, and is on display in Heyshott village hall. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
HIBALDSTOW, Lincolnshire - The winner of a competition devised by Glanford Borough Council in 1988 with a display including video, dialect tape, photos, a collage of listed buildings, paintings of the village, a model and more besides.
HIGHBROOK, West Sussex - made as part of the West Sussex Millennium Parish Maps Project. It is featured in the book A Sense of Place.
HIGHBURY, London - a map drawn between 1990-91 by Highbury Roundhouse Pensioners Club.
HIGHAM, Kent - a 7'6" x 3'6" fabric collage with ceramic work and photos, made in 1988.
HIGHFIELDS COUNTRY PARK, South Yorkshire - a computer-generated map made in 1994 by sculptor Chris Campbell working with pupils from the local primary school. Drawings made in workshops were scanned into a computer and digitally manipulated to make the final poster.
HIGH LITTLETON, Somerset - Wild life survey maps, 1990.
HIGHWORTH, Wiltshire - a 5' x 5' textile map made by Highworth WI in 1991 as part of a competition held by the Wiltshire Federation of WIs in that year (it won second prize). Each member of the group embroidered a 2" x 2" representation of her house. It is kept in Highworth Town Council's committee room.
HIMBLETON, Worcestershire - A map made by pupils at Himbleton CE First School in 2006 as part of the Worcestershire Parish Mapping Project.
HINGHAM, Norfolk - Initiated by the Hingham Society in 1995, this A11 painted and drawn poster shows flora and fauna, buildings, the evolution of the place name, weather, population, history, footpaths, agriculture and geology. See what local people have said about the map.
